FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
Where are you located?
Our shop is located near the town of Sebastopol in rural Sonoma County,
California. It is about an hour's drive north of San Francisco. For a map to our shop, click here.
How long have you been in business?
We have been building custom wood windows since 1978.
What type of windows do you make?
All kinds: casements, double hungs, sliders, hoppers, awnings, fixed,
direct glazed, and various combinations of the above. For a more comprehensive list of the types of windows we make, click here.
Do you do commercial jobs?
Yes. We have made windows for a museum, a large hotel, and for several wineries.
Most of our work, however, is residential.
Where is your work distributed?
Most of our clients are in the greater Bay Area. However, we have done work for homes in Lake Tahoe, Hawaii and Monterey.
Do you use sustainably-harvested (green) lumber?
Yes, when directed to do so. Certified "green" lumber is becoming increasingly available.
How much do your windows cost?
They tend to cost more than manufactured stock-size windows, largely because they are labor-intensive. If you need windows to match existing or old work, we can probably do it. We are also familiar with historic windows and their detailing. For an overview of the many factors that affect window costs click here.
Can you make any kind of window?
Within limits; as long as the proposed window design is structurally sound, within hardware limits, and weatherproof, we can build it.
What kind of glass do you use?
Whatever is specified. Most of our windows are dual-glazed, many with
low-E glass. We follow current building codes for safety glazing. Art glass, leaded glass, and various specialty glass products are also frequently specified.
Do your windows come with hardware?
Our windows include the operating hardware such as hinges and sash balances. We can also supply finish hardware as an option. Finish hardware is usually supplied loose to be installed on site by others after painting.
Do you help with window design?
Yes. We have decades of experience, and are happy to consult with clients, architects and builders.
Are your windows painted?
We usually prime our windows. If they are stain grade, we prime only
the exteriors. The client or contractor is responsible for finish painting and staining.
If I am interested in purchasing your windows, how do I proceed?
The first step is to provide us with the information we need to accurately price the windows (window specifications and design information from the plans or sketches). If we arrive at a price that you deem acceptable,
we will then produce shop drawings. When the drawings are approved, we can begin fabrication.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. Typically, one third of the total project cost is due initially, and is sent to us before we begin production.
How long will it take to produce my windows?
As a rule of thumb, we need a week for each $12,000 worth of windows.
For example, a $50,000 job will take us about a month. We can commit to a completion date only when we have received approved shop drawings.
